Correction
A photo in the June/July issue incorrectly identified a baby mammal in “Bosque Notes” as a baby porcupine. It was, in fact, a baby hedgehog, according to Corrales biologist Jim Findley, a mammalogist who helped create the Corrales Bosque Nature Preserve in the 1980s. Findley notes that hedgehogs “have big, laterally directed ears, forward-directed eyes, pointed snouts, and a little dark nose. They are a lot smaller than porcupines. Even a newly born porky would be bigger than the critter pictured and could not be handled so cavalierly. The hedgehog in the picture is maybe half the size of an adult.” Most important, hedgehogs do not occur naturally in the Western Hemisphere.
