Julie Hart painted Survivor after visiting Caye Caulker in Belize, an island overrun with strays. She was intrigued by one dog’s calm elegance despite having to live by scavenging tourist handouts. A rescue volunteer who paints
portraits of homeless animals, she has donated more than $1,200 to the cause since she began her adoptable series in 2010. (Prints of Survivor were donated to the Caye Caulker Humane Society to use in fundraising.) Hart moved to Albuquerque from Virginia in 2013 and continues to foster dogs as well as paint them.
