Known for her evocative watercolor paintings on Native American themes, Dyanne Strongbow of Corrales got her start as a commercial artist working for the Texas Department of Water Resources. Growing awareness of her Native heritage led her to abandon her Texas landscapes for visual explorations of her Choctaw background. “Legends, myths, and the daily lives of all peoples inspire me,” says Strongbow, who uses shadow forms and experimentations with negative space to explore Native unity with the natural world. “My challenge is to take these ideas and turn them into a painting.”
