Painter, printmaker, and calligrapher Diana Stetson draws inspiration both from her childhood among the fields and woods of New York’s Hudson River Valley, and her extended studies of art and calligraphy in Japan and China. A graduate of Reed College, she has studied and traveled widely, receiving more than 20 grants and awards for her work, including a Bravo Award for Excellence in Visual Art in 2003. Protecting Elephant was painted in response to a recent slaughter of African elephants for their tusks. A poem she wrote to go with the painting notes: “If anyone wants to know/what elephants are like/I can tell you one true thing:/elephants are like people,/only more so.” A full-time artist, Stetson lives in the North Valley with her husband, mother, three dogs and a cat.
