GROWING UP in rural Wisconsin, Ruth Tatter developed a love of domestic animals and their wild cousins, which she drew from a young age. After studying art at Colorado College and the University of Arizona at Tucson, she moved to northern New Mexico in the 1970s, and is represented locally by Marigold Arts on Canyon Road. “There is something like an
invisible curtain between wildlife and ourselves,” she says. “For me, the painting surface is like that curtain. The images look out from a distant world and hopefully draw the viewer to have their own contemplative interest in them—and maybe create enough of an interest that would lead to thoughtful conservation.”
