Corrales artist Juan Wijngaard made this wood engraving of a burrowing owl, which he remembers from his childhood in Argentina. His Dutch parents moved back to the Netherlands when he was a teenager, and he studied graphic design and illustration in England, graduating with a master’s degree from the Royal College of Art in London. Living in Switzerland, England, and Wales, Wijngaard had a successful career as a children’s book illustrator, winning prominent awards for his work. In 2003 he began oil painting for pleasure, and a year later moved his family to Corrales, where he began life as a painter. He is currently president of the cooperative Corrales Bosque Gallery, where you can see his oil and egg tempera paintings, and other wood engravings. For more information: juanwijngaard.com.
